Traditional Suzani Embroidery was suppressed during the Soviet period, but since the independence of Uzbekistan in 1991, it has once again flourished. This embroidery of a brightly-coloured bird surrounded by flowers and leaves is inspired by contemporary Suzani design.
The kit includes twelve shades of New Zealand crewel wool, while the stitches include stem stitch, chain stitch, split stitch, French knots, and fly stitch.
The central motif is printed on a generous piece of natural-coloured cotton linen (59 cm × 38 cm), offering plenty of scope for finishing. Create a cushion with the design as it is, extend the embroidery into the borders, or add a patchwork edging. It also works beautifully as a framed textile piece.
